Botox for Sweating

While many think of Botox® as simply a cosmetic injection for issues like wrinkles, lines, and signs of aging, it is much more. Botox has a number of FDA-approved uses that are not cosmetic. Many of our patients are surprised to find out that Botox is an incredibly effective treatment for excessive underarm sweating.

FDA-approved for underarm sweating in 2004, Botox has shown that it is incredibly successful in treating excessive underarm sweating when other treatments can’t.

If you suffer from excessive underarm sweating and have tried topical creams, medications, or other remedies to no avail it may be time to try Botox for sweating. Severe underarm sweating, also known as primary axillary hyperhidrosis, can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Get results that last with Botox. How Does Botox for Sweating Work?

In some cases of severe underarm sweating, clinical-grade antiperspirants and medications are not enough. For patients with this issue, Botox can be a great option as it lasts long and does not require daily maintenance.

Botox is made up of the Botulinum toxin type A. This is a natural protein toxin that can paralyze the muscles in the target areas where it is injected. A series of small injections of the substance is put under both arms. This results in a temporary cessation of sweat gland function in the area.

Studies have shown that when injected in the armpit area, Botox is 82-87% effective in reducing underarm sweating. If you are tired of trying different medications and worrying about your excess perspiration, it is time to ask your doctor about Botox for sweating.

What Is the Procedure Like?

The Botox for sweating procedure is quick and easy. Treatments can take under ten minutes and are not generally painful. However, if you choose, your practitioner can apply a topical anesthetic to the area to minimize discomfort.

Your provider will ask that you refrain from shaving for a few days leading up to the procedure. During the procedure, one of our expert injectors will inject several syringes of Botox into your armpits in a grid-type pattern. One of the biggest benefits of the procedure is that there is no downtime or recovery. In turn, patients are free to return to work or your normal activities right after the procedure.

The Dermatologic Surgery Center recommends that you avoid activities that will result in sweating for a few days following treatment as it takes a few days for results to become effective.

We recommend that you follow up with the Dermatologic Surgery Center 1-2 weeks after treatment. Our staff will evaluate your results and administer touch-up injections to any area that is still sweating.

When Will I See Results?

Following the treatment, Botox takes a few days to reach its maximum effect in the underarm area. Some patients begin to see results in as little as three days. However, most patients see maximum results in  7-14 days. Treatment results tend to last longer than cosmetic Botox treatments, as many patients have seen a significant decrease in perspiration for up to six months*.
