Foot Care

While many people give little consideration to their feet, you may contract a foot problem making you wish you paid more attention. Issues such as fungal infections and ingrown toenails can cause a lot of discomfort and even affect your day-to-day life. One common foot infection is Athlete’s Foot, which can cause itching, stinging, and burning between the toes. On the soles of the feet, it can cause blisters and cracked or peeling skin. There are a number of steps you can take to avoid these issues, such as wearing shoes that fit and caring for your hygiene. However, these steps are not always enough. If you are looking for foot care in Medina, we have got you covered!

If you are suffering from a painful or debilitating foot problem, the Dermatologic Surgery Center in Medina, Ohio can help. We offer a number of different treatments to help relieve these problems and get you back on your feet again.

Foot Ailments

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is characterized by fissures or splitting skin between the toes. The feet may smell more unpleasant than usual. If you have very inflamed skin that looks like it is cracked or peeling, you may have contracted an additional bacterial infection. Causes can include bacterial infection, mold infection, soft corn (accumulation of skin between toes), injury, skin conditions (such as eczema) and fungal infection. As the name implies, this condition disproportionately affects athletes, who may sweat, wear occlusive shoes and make frequent contact with fungus-covered surfaces, such as gym showers.

Athlete’s foot is relatively common, but if the symptoms appear extra hideous (think bright red, silvery-white skin flakes, green/blue coloration), you may want to come into our office. We can test the fungus and bacteria from your foot through lab tests and a Wood’s Lamp examination. After testing, we may prescribe a treatment based on the results. Antifungal foot powder can prevent relapse.

Cracked Heel

Cracked heel occurs when your feet become so dry and so layered with dead skin cells they look as if the skin covering them is broken. This cracked appearance lends to insecurity but also to pain. When you stand on your cracked heels, you may feel the extra pressure on your feet. The heels may appear yellow or brown and calloused. You may get this if you also have eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition.

We treat cracked heels through different measures, including debridement or removal of hard skin and medication containing debriding agents, such as urea and salicylic acid. We may recommend a good moisturizer, as well as an exfoliation routine with a pumice stone or similarly abrasive tool.

Gout is a condition in which crystals accumulate underneath the skin and form huge bumps. Causes include excess uric acid, which forms after consuming high-protein foods. Such foods include meat, seafood, and alcohol. If you have kidney disease, you may have a hard time expelling uric acid and thus be more prone to getting gout. Because gout develops after 20 years of uric acid elevation, it takes a long time for men, and especially women, to develop it.

If you have lumps in the joints of your feet or your big toe, you may experience extreme pain, swelling, and stiffening. Not only can gout physically hurt; it can cause kidney damage by creating kidney stones, as well as joint damage. We may recommend NSAIDs and corticosteroids (to help you combat inflammation), colchicine, and other medications. Consult your regular healthcare practitioner in combination with our dermatologist.
