Preventative Skin Care

At the Dermatologic Surgery Center in Medina, Ohio, we believe that preventative skincare is an important investment. One example of a common concern we can prevent is acne. When patients visit us regularly, we are able to offer a personalized treatment plan that helps prevent breakouts in the first place. These treatment plans help you to maintain your smooth, healthy complexion and do not cost as much as treatments to correct the acne scars left behind.

In reality, most people wait until skin problems manifest. Here are some common skin issues and why you may benefit from addressing them at our dermatology office.

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis is age spots or sunspots that come in different colors, such as brown, tan, grey, or pink. They tend to appear on the body parts most exposed to the sun. A popular place for age spots to develop is the décolletage or upper chest, shoulders, and neck. Other places might include the hands, arms, face, and scalp. Age spots look like thick, dry patches.

If you are covered in actinic keratoses (AKs), we recommend you stop by so we can monitor changes long-term and look for skin cancer. Your chance of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) if you have AKs can be as high as 10%. While abstaining from tanning, you should watch for changes such as hardening, redness, bleeding, rapid volume increase, and inflammation. But you may not know what to look for and may even require surgery, such as Mohs’ micrographic surgery. If you have any age spots, you should make an appointment now. Don’t assume they are benign. Cancer can quickly become life-threatening.

Although similar in etymology to cellulite, cellulitis is very distinct. This condition is a common bacterial infection that appears as red, swollen skin. Like stasis dermatitis, cellulitis hurts and typically affects the skin on the lower legs. Symptoms include fever, pain, tenderness, redness, warmth, glossiness, rash, and abscess with pus. We recommend you visit us if you have any of these symptoms, especially the following: chills, dizziness, sweating, muscle aches, and shaking. The worst symptoms, warranting immediate action, include red streaks, lethargy, and blistering. If you have diabetes, eczema, athlete’s foot or breaks in the skin, you may be at higher risk for this Staphylococcus and Streptococcus infection.

Come to DSC immediately if you have symptoms associated with cellulitis. You may require a regime of antibiotics. As with any antibiotics course, success depends on you taking the full series. This infection can quickly become life-threatening by entering your bloodstream.

Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis is inflammation due to circulation problems. The symptoms often occur in the legs and feet, where blood tends to pool, and include swelling, open sores, itchiness, and redness. When blood pools, it pressure veins and damages the capillaries, causing proteins to leak. The buildup of proteins, blood cells, and fluid generates swelling, known as peripheral edema.

If you have venous insufficiency or trouble sending blood toward your heart, you may be more likely to have stasis dermatitis. But this condition has other serious causes, such as deep vein thrombosis, surgery complications, and injury to the legs. Coming to DSC might awaken you to severe, underlying health problems, such as congestive heart failure. Regardless of the cause, we can help treat your symptoms to reduce swelling and the risks associated with stasis dermatitis. Such risks include chronic leg ulcers, bone infection, bacterial skin infection, and scarring. Our dermatologist may prescribe steroids and/or antibiotics, as necessary.

While many patients only go to see the dermatologist when they have a concern, we recommend coming in for regular appointments. This allows our expert staff to periodically evaluate your skin and address issues. Contact us today to schedule your appointment at our facility in Medina, Ohio. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you maintain your skin health, ensuring a beautiful complexion for years to come!
