Hair and Nails
At the Dermatologic Surgery Center in Medina, Ohio, we offer a number of different treatments to help improve the appearance and health of your hair and nails. Their condition can reflect or play into your overall health and hygiene. Certainly, your hair and nails affect your daily life. It is important to take proper care of them.
Nail Conditions
A variety of nail conditions appear in our patients. Each condition requires a different assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Here are a few nail conditions we might treat.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail is a common toenail problem where a toenail becomes painful or irritable due to a foreign body reaction of keratinaceous tissue nail penetrating the cuticle. Possible causes include tight shoes, infection, trauma, and poorly trimmed toenails. This condition often occurs in adolescents, young children, and pregnant women.
At DSC, we can treat ingrown toenails in many ways. We may suggest packing, taping, gutter treatment, nail braces and phenolization. We will explain the procedure to you so you know why we recommend that specific intervention.
Clubbing of the Nails
Clubbing of nails occurs when nails seem to bulge up and wrap around enlarged fingertips. It is linked to conditions such as lung disease and Crohn’s disease.
Because clubbing often coexists with diseases, treatment may require developing a prognosis for the underlying condition. We may be able to help you prevent the appearance from worsening.
Hair and Scalp Conditions
Like nail problems, hair issues can be difficult to hide and can be very embarrassing. Issues such as hair loss can undermine your confidence and self-image. Here are two hair and scalp conditions we treat, among many.
Alopecia Areata (Hair Loss)
Alopecia areata is a condition where hair falls out in big, round patches. When the immune system attacks the hair follicles, hair falls out. Symptoms can also occur in the nails. Your nails may have pitting or dents, white spots or lines and rough texture. Alopecia areata often begins in childhood.
Our dermatologist-trained staff can treat the condition through hair restoration treatments. One such treatment occurs through corticosteroids through a shot or topical cream, which suppress the immune system. Another treatment, Minoxidil, can help regrow your hair. Because there is no cure for alopecia areata, you may experience more hair loss or sporadic re-growth. Treatment effectiveness depends on how your immune system reacts.
Scalp Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis is psoriasis that appears on the scalp. Scaly, itchy, red patches appear on the scalp’s thicker skin, with hair in the way. It may look like dandruff, with silvery-white flaking. Unlike dandruff, scalp psoriasis creates a broader silvery sheen on the scalp. Symptoms may include dryness, bleeding, itching, a burning sensation, and temporary hair loss.
If you have plague psoriasis, you have a large chance of having a flare-up on your scalp. We can help you deal with your scalp psoriasis by prescribing medicated shampoos, injections, medicine for the scalp, scale softeners, and other medications.
